My career with the STFC began in 2012 as a graduate in the CMOS Image Sensor group.

From day one, I was involved in real-world projects used in scientific research applications.

While I initially contributed to only a small part of the design in my first project, I quickly gained the opportunity to participate in the entire design process.

This experience not only deepened my understanding of the analysis behind design decisions but also taught me the immense value of peer review. It provided me with a solid foundation for understanding various aspects of sensor design.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working on projects spanning a wide range of applications, including particle physics, transmission electron microscopy, cryo-EM, radiation monitoring, SPADs and line scanners.

One of the most rewarding experiences was my involvement in the HMRM 2 (Highly Miniaturised Radiation Monitoring, Phase 2) project, where I took on project management responsibilities and collaborated closely with RAL Space. This role marked a key milestone in my professional development.

Throughout my career, I’ve focused on learning through hands-on experience, with a commitment to rapid progression.

I’ve built confidence by taking on increasing responsibilities and gaining valuable insights from each experience.

While the prospect of managing a project independently, especially without formal training, was initially daunting, I received plenty of mentoring and support from my team and managers.

Through this process, I learned how to liaise with potential customers and sub-contractors, and collaborate with camera development and testing teams.

Perhaps the most valuable aspect of working within the sensor group has been the opportunity for career development. The organization has offered me the flexibility to specialize and deepen my knowledge in specific areas or broaden my expertise in sensor design.

More recently, I worked on the development of a line scanner, where I was responsible for the top-level floor plan and simulation, and noise analysis.

I can’t emphasize enough the flexibility STFC provides as an employer, allowing me to manage both work and family commitments seamlessly. Science and Engineering are for everyone and STFC is a great place to provide the optimum framework for it.
